Nedan mitt avslutande anförande på flerdagarskonferens om framtiden för kristna i Irak.
Konferensens slutdokument publiceras inom kort.
We are about to conclude our conference.
Let me, briefly – share some thoughts and reflections about the outcome of these days.
When we met Wednesday night I underlined that we have come to make the case for the victims of persecution and genocide.
We have come to take part in an important dialogue, about the need for unity, responsibility and political action.
With a very clear objective.
To contribute to reconstruction, repatriation and a brighter future for the indigenous peoples of Northern Iraq and Nineveh Plains.
Without being pretentious, I´d like to say that we have delivered on this.
With your dedication to the process of finding compromises and consensus – we have not only met expectations, we have exceeded expectations.
What you as representatives of your people have achieved is historic.
I say “you” because it is your decisions, it is your position document, it is your accomplishments.
Let me recap what I said yesterday, in my dinner remarks.
– Your demands are just:
To live freely, safely, and prosperously in your ancestral homeland.
To practice your faith without fear of persecution.
And to take your rightful place as equal citizens, in a land you have called home since time centuries.
– Your demands are legal:
They are grounded in the Iraqi constitution – upheld by the council of ministers, and are aligned with the laws and principles of a federal Iraqi state.
– Your demands are fair:
The Chaldean/Syriac/Assyrian people are not demanding any unreasonable accommodation.
You are simply expressing your people’s desire to exercise your fundamental and constitutional right to self-determination.
You are not asking anyone to do it for you – you are taking responsibility for your future and are merely expecting the support from the world.
Support to which you are clearly entitled.
I would like to congratulate you all, to this success.
I congratulate you to a very clear and coherent position.
There is no longer any confusion about the will of the Chaldean/Syriac/Assyrian people.
Representatives of the EU and the US will now return home, with a well drafted document that clearly spells out your position.
With this achievement as a basis and a foundation, we will now move forward – together.
My office and I remain committed to working with you, and your representatives, in order to take further steps – trough political contacts, political pressure and demands for action.
I sincerely thank you all, for coming to this conference, for your courageous leadership – and for remaining faithful to the process.
Finding consensus is never simple – but it is necessary.
And remember, leaders are judged based on what they build, rather than what they destroy.
As I said yesterday; you have built something during these days in Brussels.
On behalf of the European Parliament, on behalf of my party group EPP, on behalf of my staff and myselfÖ
Thank you for your constructive work and for your dedication to a brighter future for the Chaldean/Syriac/Assyrian people.
Let´s stay in touch my Friends – see you soon.
